Open Wearables

React Native SDK for Open Wearables

Connect mobile apps to wearable data without fragmented device APIs

Open Wearables gives engineering teams an open-source React Native SDK that bridges Apple HealthKit, Google Health Connect, and wearable hardware into one normalized data layer.

Stop writing bespoke connectors for every device ecosystem. Stream clean biometric signals, sleep metrics, and activity streams into cross-platform iOS and Android products with production-tested mobile infrastructure.

See our production deployment for ENARD's Olympic athletes for an example of wearable data powering a sports platform.

What this enables

  • Integration of wearable data into React Native apps
  • Faster development of health and wellness platforms
  • Access to real-time biometric and activity data
  • Interoperability across devices and ecosystems
  • Foundation for AI-driven insights and recommendations

Why it matters

Wearable data has massive potential — but its value is limited by fragmented ecosystems and closed platforms.

We believe open infrastructure is key to unlocking that value.

By contributing to Open Wearables, we help enable a more open, interoperable ecosystem for digital health innovation.

Our contribution

  • Designed and developed a React Native SDK for Open Wearables
  • Simplified integration of wearable data into mobile applications
  • Enabled cross-platform compatibility (iOS & Android)
  • Supported developers building next-generation health products

Frequently Asked Questions

What devices does the Open Wearables React Native SDK support?

The SDK connects React Native apps to Apple HealthKit on iOS and Google Health Connect on Android, including background synchronization subject to platform permissions and scheduling. Apple Watch data is available through Apple Health. Data from Garmin, Whoop, Oura, Polar, and BLE clinical monitors depends on each device's health-store integration or a separate provider connector; the SDK does not directly connect to every device.

Is the Open Wearables SDK open source?

Yes. Both the Open Wearables core platform and the React Native SDK are open source under the MIT license and hosted on GitHub. The Blue Box contributed the React Native SDK to help engineering teams build cross-platform health products.

Can this SDK be used for HIPAA-compliant clinical platforms?

The SDK can form part of a Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) or decentralized clinical trial architecture. HIPAA compliance depends on the complete deployment, including risk assessment, access controls, audit logging, secure storage and transmission, and appropriate business associate agreements. Using the SDK alone does not establish compliance; any local caching must be secured and validated as part of the application.
